Lathe Cutting Tools
A lathe is a tool that rotates a workpiece along an axis in order to perform a range of operations - sanding, knurling, deformation, drilling and of course cutting. This depends on the tools that are applied to the object - interchangeable attachments which can be used to provide various results. Because the workpiece will rotate along a certain axis, this means that by using the lathe you are able to give your material a symmetry around that axis.
Lathes are used for a range of purposes and with a range of materials. They are for instance used for woodturning, metalwork, glasswork and metal spinning. They can also be used to shape pottery and the most famous example of lathe probably is the potters wheel. Potter's wheels are in fact sometimes referred to as 'potter's lathes' but this term is also used for another device that is used for a different shaping process. On a potter's wheel the pot will spin and the potter will then use their hands in order to craft and shape the pot symmetrically rather than a tool in most cases.
It is also possible to get ornamental lathes. These are used in order to create complex and attractive three dimensional solids. Other than pottery and ornaments, other items creating using lathes and lathe cutting tools include candles, candle holders, table legs, crockery, baseball bats, instruments (particularly woodwind), camshafts, crankshafts and cue sticks - but really any item that appears as though it may have started life as a cylinder or block and that has a symmetry about it, is likely to have been created using a lathe.
Interestingly the lathe and lathe cutting tools date back as far as ancient Egypt and have been used by many ancient cultures including Assyria, Greece and Rome. The process is often referred to as 'turning' and the first examples of lathes discovered from Ancient Egypt interestingly required two people to operate - one person would turn the material (then almost exclusively wood) while the the other would use a sharp tool in order to cut shapes into it. The design was improved subsequently by the Romans who added a turning bow - and in the middle ages this was replaced by a pedal which prevented the need for hand turning allowing lathes to be used by single individuals.
Today of course lathes utilise motors. The material is held in place by one or two centres which can be adjusted horizontally in order to allow for various different lengths. You may also clamp the workpiece on the axis of rotation using a chuck or collet. A tool rest exists with a lock to allow you to adjust and maintain the height of your cutting tools to ensure you achieve perfect symmetry.
Of course in order to use a lathe whether for industrial purposes or for home craftmanship it is important to have the correct tools and to keep these shape. Lathe cutting tools by necessity must be very sharp in order to cut through the workpiece without slowing its rotation or getting stuck.
